James Suckling is the first top wine critic to publish his En Primeur scores of the 2016 vintage. Always one of the earliest to set out his stall for the latest Bordeaux vintage, his overall view is that “2016 is an exceptional vintage, equal to the exquisite 2015”. Suckling may well be using this platform to position himself as Parker’s successor as the wine world focuses on Bordeaux at this time of year.
Whatever the ‘agenda’, Liv-ex has compared the 45 wines that have been scored by Suckling to the same wines of the 2015 vintage, rating an average of 96.3 points for 2016 as opposed to 95.5 in 2015. Certainly, this early indicator suggests the two vintages are of comparative quality
Both Rothschild dynasties see their Grand Vins achieving the perfect 100 point scores with Suckling comparing Mouton 2016 with 1986 (“but better”) and Lafite “perhaps the greatest since the legendary 1959”. See more detail in the table below:
