Today marks the final day of the online auction which started two weeks ago to sell the third tranche of Sir Alex Ferguson’s fine wine collection. His first investments into this high-profile portfolio took place following a chance conversation over lunch in Montpelier in France in 1991 whilst scouting out a suitable hotel for his players in advance of a Champions League Quarter Final tie. He began with Bordeaux wines from the excellent 1982 and 1985 vintages and during his career expanded this to also include wines from Burgundy and Tuscany.
Sir Alex acquired a substantial amount of 1999 Domaine de la Romanee Conti (DRC) in honour of Manchester United’s last minute victory in the Champions League that year. There are 5,000 bottles in the overall sale but he is selling only part of his collection, mainly his “star players”. He has a few amusing tales to tell about his rival managers and wine, e.g. Roberto Mancini knew his wine and always bought some Tignanello when visiting, which Sir Alex believes is an under-rated wine. When asked what he would drink should Scotland ever reach the World Cup Final, he advised he would celebrate with either Petrus or DRC.
The first auction took place in May in Hong Kong at Christies and the second was in London earlier this month. This final online only stage of the trilogy is expected to achieve an overall value of more than £3million.
