We are unashamed fans of Cheval Blanc; one of Saint Emilion’s four Premier Grand Cru Classés A houses. A recent visit to the region included a visit to the home of one of the most architecturally futuristic buildings in Bordeaux, where I had the great pleasure and privilege of spending time with some of the senior team.
I was there with Geoffrey Dean to get a first indicator on the now much anticipated 2015 vintage, but in the process we were re-introduced to Cheval Blanc 2011. No doubt this was a vintage that had the unfortunate challenge of following two of the greatest vintages in modern time. This was always going to be a tough act to follow and the market almost had too much highly scored wine available; there almost needed to be a lessening of the bench-mark.
With this back-drop of a rather unheralded vintage, the Cheval Blanc team still felt 2011 was a special wine, even a brilliant one. Scored by Parker at 95 in 2013, when he is quoted as saying “One of the more opulent and sexy Cheval Blancs… Super and complex. Bravo”.
Cheval Blanc’s Technical Director, Pierre-Olivier Clouet, believes 2011 is maturing extraordinarily well and has the potential to eventually rank alongside the stunning 2010.
