Bordeaux vintages can be like buses, you wait for years and then two turn up at the same time. This is what happened in 2009 and 2010 but in the process the “vintage of the decade”, namely 2005 seems to have been overlooked and forgotten, until now. Timing seems to have been the key, specifically its 10th birthday, when top Bordeaux from great vintages is deemed to be ready for consumption. A recent article in the South China Morning Post highlighted the fact that in the New Year the “secondary” market for Bordeaux finally woke up and realised that the 2005 Bordeaux vintage could indeed be the vintage of the century or indeed a lifetime. This was relected in the Liv-ex Bordeaux 500 which rose up sharply in January with three of the five First Growths increasing in value between 7 – 12%.
Those of us at Vin-X who have been lucky enough to taste the 2005 vintage can concur that this is a vintage that will continue to improve. Whilst some of the wines are ready to drink now the majority will continue to evolve and improve for a while longer so the potential for greater investment returns still exists. And now that they are starting to hit their drinking window will only mean a reduction in supply which means that the biggest problem will be sourcing available stock. Hopefully this should be great news for those who invested early. Please click below for full article.
