Every 4 – 6 weeks we publish a review on the fine wine market gathering together key performance data and relevant trade information we believe is important to share with fine wine investors and those considering entering the market.
In our September 2018 Fine Wine Investment Market Report we take our usual look at the performance data of Liv-ex indices and compare this to the FTSE 100, S&P and Gold over the year to date, 1 year and 5 year periods – wine is certainly more of a ‘safe haven’ on a pure performance basis.
Diversification by region is a strong mantra for our portfolio managers as the market share of trade on Liv-ex itself has shifted significantly over recent years, with Bordeaux now representing nearer 60% of business, as opposed to 85% plus only a few years ago. We look at the average regional performance of wines from Burgundy, California, Spain, Australia, Bordeaux, Rhone and Champagne to guide investors.
Champagne has had a solid track record over recent years and Louis Roederer’s Cristal 2008 has been the top traded wine on Liv-ex in 2018 to the 31st August, we look at the other top traded investment wines this year including the Bordeaux classics currently delivering double-digit returns.
Following Liv-ex’s recent launch of its California 50 Index we take a closer look at the iconic Californian wines ‘ in our In Focus’ section of the report.
Profiting from Passion Assets is a regular theme and we review recent record-breaking sales in both classic cars and fine wine to remind you of the apex performance of these luxury investments and beneficial tax treatment.
The 2018 harvest is underway with some regions having an early start this year as a result of the European heatwave this summer, we provide our early thoughts on this, what’s catching the top industry critics’ attention and our Tip of the Month.
