Pavie, Ausone and the First Growths released their 2018 wines this week, remember Latour no longer participates in the en primeur system. Haut Brion, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild and Lafite Rothschild all issued the latest vintage at prices at least 17% (ex negociant) higher than the 2017 vintage. Ausone, one of the two original St Emilion Grand Cru Classe A estates, also released at an international trade price 24% higher than its 2017 price and the market is still waiting for Cheval Blanc.
But Chateau Pavie priced their 2018 wines more keenly, only 2.2% higher than its 2017 release (ex-negociant) and 4.3% up on the international trade release price.
Given 2018 is a higher average quality scored vintage than 2017, it is not unsurprising that average release prices are higher. For some Bordeaux producers, 2018 was a challenging vintage and supply this year may be reduced, for example Mouton Rothschild supply is reported to be down by 30% with en primeur allocations reduced by 35 – 40%. This may also support a higher release price.
