Cheval Blanc, which ranks alongside the other Grand Cru Classe A St Emilion estates Ausone, Angelus and Pavie, released its 2018 vintage to international trade at a price 24.2% higher than its 2017 vintage at £6,588 per 12-bottle case.
The 2017 vintage was a lower scored Cheval Blanc (93 – 95 Neal Martin) and in fact the Chateau released 2017 at 22% discount to its previously higher scored 2016 vintage (NM 97 – 99). Antonio Galloni scored Chateau Cheval Blanc 2018 at 97 – 100 points, so you can argue that the 2018 price is reflecting the higher quality. Cheval Blanc’s release price is also higher than the First Growths (excluding Latour which is not releasing en primeur as usual), but its St Emilion neighbour, Ausone, has topped the apppellation’s 2018 release prices.
Lafite 2018 is currently the highest priced First Growth at £6,000 per 12-bottle case. Investors will be banking on Cheval Blanc 2018 attaining its potential perfect 100 point score at future tastings to deliver value going forward.
