The only commune named after its eponymous First Growth, Chateau Margaux, this appellation has the highest number of 21 chateaux ranked in the 1855 classification.

Due to its most southerly location in the Medoc and excellent terroir the wines tend to be characterized as perfumed and elegant but the advent of modern winemaking techniques has lessened this distinction. It is the second largest commune on the Left Bank and contains five Second Growths. However it does have the smallest vineyard in Chateau Ferriere. The other chateaux with investment potential are the Second Growth, Rauzan Segla and Third Growth, Palmer.
